Good Morning Friends & Digital Neighbors! Happy Tuesday all you visitors to @ Padre's! More quotes and a bit of commentary. We don't want another blatterooning post. 😁
You have not converted a man, because you have silenced him. - John Morley, On Compromise
There is no such way to . . . give defense to strange and absurd doctrines, as to guard them round about with legions of obscure, doubtful and undefined words. - John Locke, An Essay Concerning Human Understanding
Both quotes sum up the current state of questions, discourse and dialogue in our culture. Silence the questions, mock the criticisms, label and dismiss disagreements. An attack on the person is usually a good sign that the strength of the opposing argument is too weak for the opponent to be confident in it. Nothing silences a person like death, but ideas, questions and disputes don't always die with the death of a proponent. Sometimes they do when the movement is small, but not when it is widespread.
Regarding the Locke quote, we have been entertaining the theater of the absurd for years thanks to the undue influence our culture gives to higher education. I am not sure how or if we can walk it back to a culture of dialogue and debate when we can't even agree on vocabulary and the meaning of words. Not only are words of vague meaning making it difficult if not impossible, we use more and more terms of depersonalization to reduce people to functions and fluids. I really think a Wokeinary might be needed.😊

His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV. Widely recognized as one of the greatest French writers, and even hyperbolically referred to by ...
