Today marks the three hundred and thirtieth birthday of the Frenchman François-Marie Arouet, better known by his nom de plume, Voltaire (1694-1778).
Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV. Good morning, Digital Neighbors! Happy Tuesday — time for more fun with Susie Dent and her love of obscure or infrequent phrases. My parents were born in 1926 and 1927 (Dad would turn 100 this September had he remained with us), and some of the phrases Susie unearthed were ones my mom and dad used. Anyway, on to a few phrases for fun and learning. Happy Tuesday, my friends!
(To) Live the life of Riley - To live luxuriously. Riley (or Reilly) is said to be a character in a 19th-century comic song. One possible candidate is Pat Rooney’s “Are You the O’Reilly?” (originally “Is That Mr. Reilly?” in 1883), which describes what the hero would do if he “struck it rich.”
Pop Goes the Weasel -The rhyme refers to the Eagle Tavern in London’s City Road. Any serious amount of drinking there might mean the customer has to “pop,” or pawn, their “weasel,” which was rhyming slang for a coat (“weasel and stoat”).
