Back in the mid 90's I was introduced to the artist Mary Engelbreit
by the teachers I knew at various parishes who used her artwork in their classroom. I still enjoy her artwork probably because it stirs a nostalgic memory of simpler times in the past. I am not sure they were better (As per @zoomerqc quote about the past seeming to be better because of bad memories) but I do suspect the pace was less hectic and the accessibility of others was more directly personal. Not ideal, there were problems, always are given broken humanity and its selfish inclinations and petty preoccupations that take effort and awareness to overcome. Anyway, Mary's artwork is very heart warming to me and stirs memories and thoughts that are more happy and hopeful. Some of her artwork and another autumn photo. Today marks the three hundred and thirtieth birthday of the Frenchman François-Marie Arouet, better known by his nom de plume, Voltaire (1694-1778).
Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV.
