The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives.
Great quote and many are not interested in the pursuit of either. We hardly believe in any amount of truth, since people "telling us the truth" are in fact only manipulating us. Who has any confidence in the Media or Big Tech? if you are on Locals you don't, I can't think of a platform started with more awareness of how people or businesses in position of authority can abuse the bond of trust. Terms of Service - a minor bond between the provider and consumer that would indicate there is a mutual understanding. We all know know that TOS can change without any input from the consumers and in fact the consumer can be removed, silenced, vanished in a moment.
Beauty - we still long for it, but we have no common consensus on it for the most part. Maybe nature still holds a universal appeal to the beauty it can reveal to us, but art is wide ranging and so diverse anymore that I am not sure we have anything in common other than what appeal to us on an individual basis. When art is no longer concerned with beauty it just becomes a matter of self-expression. All art of is self-expressive, but some artist might benefit from something more therapeutic in addition to their art. If your art doesn't contain some element of beauty, is it art?
To be a child - to return to trust, which allows you to accept that one can finds little truths and perhaps become aware of greater truths. To be a child - to rediscover the joy of living even when life is difficult, far from perfect and at times filled with great sorrow & frustration and yet still know beauty.
Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.
Wars are won in the conflict, but the peace is only achieved when the defeated are reconciled to the point of understanding and not humiliation. The cultural spread of Othering your neighbors frees you from the burden of trying to understand them and rather just join in the herd-think of condemnation. There us a perverse feeling something akin to joy, but not actual joy when one cultivates a heart of condemnation. Is it pride? Is it some sense of self-justification or grasp at temporary power? Whatever it is, is not to good for the communal sandbox of humanity.
I guess I naively thought we were heading toward a greater sense of humanity by the end of last century after all the war & death and cultural changes that happened in the US and other nations. Now we can't even agree on genders and spend far too much time and energy lamenting the failing of the past and excessively obsessing over righting those wrongs by creating new ones. If you want retribution or restitution you do not want understanding, you want concession. Concession is one of the consolation prizes in the Othering experience, but it is fragile prize since at any moment the Adherents & Proponents of Othering can turn on each other. A team united by anger & fear does not have long term prosperity in mind, great harm and a lot of suffering can follow in its wake, but it cannot last since there is zero actual trust.
Human kind - Be both. So simple.
We all know that light travels faster than sound. That's why certain people appear bright until you hear them speak.
Perhaps I have said enough.🤔😂 Have a great day Digital Neighbors & Friends! I hope you have a great Tuesday ahead of you. Thanks for the listen this morning.
Somewhere in Ireland is this beautiful scene, not a barn but beauty enough for a Tuesday.
Today marks the three hundred and thirtieth birthday of the Frenchman François-Marie Arouet, better known by his nom de plume, Voltaire (1694-1778).
Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV. Widely recognized as one of the greatest French writers, and even hyperbolically referred to by ...
