Good Morning Digital Neighbors, Supporters and Members of Padre's, Rubin Report, Phetasy & Triggernometry. On the occasion of Memorial Day here in the States I offers prayers for our Beloved Dead who sacrificed their lives in service to our nation. So many unknowns who died in wars just and dubious, in the cause of freedom or for less honorable reasons, but they fought in that moment for the man or woman beside them, for the ones they left at home, for the ones they knew and for countless millions they didn't. We might question those who ordered them into battle, we might wonder if the cause was worthy in hindsight, but for that moment of sacrifice we honor them today.
At bar-b-ques, pool parties, and other gatherings on this unofficial beginning of Summer we want to pause and remember them. Prayers, thoughts, reflections or whatever is your method, pausing for a moment to thank the named and unnamed, the known and unknown, those who have died in conflicts most recent or since the founding of this nation are worthy of a moment. We are the wealthy who have benefitted from their selfless spirit, we are the secure because of their risk, we are the living who remember them in death.
Remember those who mourn them, parents who have lost a son or daughter, spouses who will never know the touch of their loved one again, children who will not hear the joy of their father or mother as they venture through maturity. Remember their comrades in the battle, those who witnessed their passing, who saw firsthand what sacrifice is. I know of no Vet who is not humbled this day by the awareness that it could have been them we are remembering. The sense of debt, the weight of gratitude, the communion known only in shared purpose and risk is very present to them this day. It is the most unique of friendships that they share.
While we always appreciate our Veterans, today is a day most of them hope we remember their fallen rather than thank the living. Remember if only for a moment, that the meal you enjoy, the laughter you share, the joys of this day, the blessings of this Nation, so very fragile, were honored by our Beloved Dead. It need not be a heavy day overshadowed by grief, but for some it will, but make it a day a tangible gratitude and palpable remembrance. Peace my digital neighbors and thank you sons and daughters of this nation.
Today marks the three hundred and thirtieth birthday of the Frenchman François-Marie Arouet, better known by his nom de plume, Voltaire (1694-1778).
Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV. Widely recognized as one of the greatest French writers, and even hyperbolically referred to by ...
