Old Kings Lake
When we moved up to Elsberry in 1970 to the "farm" (It was really more of clubhouse with some acreage that was farmed for my grandparents.) my parents built their retirement home just up from the lake at Apex Acres. In 1973 that house was lost to the flood, but in those three years living at the lake there was so much fun at the "farm."
MUD!
The lake was sanded in front of the house, but the bottom was really this dark rich Mississippi mud. Throwing it, smearing it, making mud pies, mud balls and trying to make mud castles were all part of the joys of playing with mud. The comforting feeling of it between your toes, the way it remained on your body after smearing it on your chest or in your hair is so memorable. There was this very earthy, slightly fishy smell to the mud that made the lake mud standout from the mud outside the lake.
For all of Mom's varied issues, letting boys be boys was all part of her freedom that she did well. She wasn't too happy when we had mud fights, but boys will eventually throw something at each other, have swords fights with sticks or do something that result in some sort of accident or injury. As long as it didn't require an emergency room visit, all was good. We were only at the lake for three years, but playing near it, swimming in it, ice skating & sledding in the winter were all part of its charm. But few things compared to the goodness of mud as young boy of only 4. Happy Tuesday Digital Neighbors!

His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV. Widely recognized as one of the greatest French writers, and even hyperbolically referred to by ...
