To be seeing the world made new each morning, as if it were the morning of that first day, and then to make the most of it for the individual soul as if it were the last day - is the daily curriculum of the mind's desire. - John H. Finely
For context if you don't know who Mr. Finley is: Finley was appointed The New York Times associate editor in 1921. On April 21, 1937, The Times announced Dr. Finley's appointment as editor-in-chief. He held that position until Nov. 16, 1938, when because of poor health he took the title of editor emeritus.
A world of wonder or a world of trouble, it pretty much depends on your attitude. John's dynamic tension of living as if it were both the first day and last day opens the possibility of receiving the most that each day has to offer.
Sr. Zoe Glenski was one of the church history professors at the seminary. She loved talking about the men and women of history, and often talked more about the one's who dealt with difficulties and failures in life rather than the most successful. "Everyone finds success easy, a better measure of character is how they handle failure." It was an often repeated line in her classes. Each new day can put the failures of the previous day in its proper context and offer the opportunity to learn from yesterday or surpass it in your striving.
The world is as large as the range of one's own interests. A narrow-minded man has a narrow outlook. The walls of his world shut out the horizon of affairs. Prejudice can maintain walls that no invention can remove. - Joseph Jastrow
I wage a constant war against self-inflicted boredom. I see so many people who seem endlessly bored by the distractions of life. Many harangue on the "young people" but I see plenty of Boomers & GenXer's sucked into their phone on a constant basis. (It could be happening right now as you read this.) 🤪 I am not hear to malign the smart phone, just our uncritical use of it. Know the power of this device in your hand, respects its power to seduce you into being a B version of the Evil Queen in Snow White. Monitor its ability to drain away the hours of living by quagmiring you in the cultural or political drama of the day, or the pursuit of dram as often happens on "social media". Humor and stupidity are an interesting combination, but over exposure to it often acts as indoctrination rather than entertainment. Welcome to the club MORONS! MORONS!! MORONS!! Opps I felt a sudden channeling of the Phetasy vibe. 😉
One of the illusions of life is that the present hour is not the critical, decisive hour. Write it on your heart that everyday is the best day of the year. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Today marks the three hundred and thirtieth birthday of the Frenchman François-Marie Arouet, better known by his nom de plume, Voltaire (1694-1778).
Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV. Widely recognized as one of the greatest French writers, and even hyperbolically referred to by ...
Happy National Best Friends Day Y'all!
I strongly suggest combining celebrations for this with National Name Your Poison Day and National Jelly-Filled Doughnut Day. Think I'll have to wash a custard doughnut down with a cold beer later.
