Better late than never, eh Digital Neighbors??? Sometimes the day gets ahead of you and you are playing catch-up which is why your friendly neighborhood Friar likes the wee-hours of the morning for prayer, pondering and my elucidations and rants on Locals.
All tuckered out: exhausted Apparently tucker was a 19th century New England word for tired or "used up." I don't hear too many using this phrase anymore, but this morning I woke up "all tuckered out" after going to better much later than normal and still waking up at my usual time. The brain was fairly fogged and the prospect of sitting in front of the glowing portal and hoping to churn out something meaningful was doubtful. Caffeine works wonders, but even it can only do so much. Black magic fluids can only provide so much relief from fatigue in the end, but they do make the morning more at least bearable. Still mostly tuckered out, but regaining some of my energy. Early to bed and early to rise like Benny says is a good practice for me.
Don't be a pill I suspect that is what I would hear from Mom, Grandma or one of my Aunts if I was to whine about being groggy today. People that are hard to swallow have been referred to as "pills" since the 19th century and the usage of pills as a medical term apparently go back to 14th century. To be a pill was not to be thought of fondly, but rather an irritant, bothersome, somewhat whiny or perhaps today a little to high maintenance. It was one of those words with a fluid noncomplimentary meaning. Mom would occasionally call one of kids or someone who whined too much or too frequently as pill pot, but for the life of me I cannot find any references to pill pots on the internet. I think that may well have been a Peggy-ism and my mom either took another phrase and botched it (not uncommon, she rarely kept names straights and would insist I knew who someone was when the name was twisted three ways to Texas). Anyways, all you tuckered out souls, try not to complain too much unless you want to be referred to as being such a pill. Happy Wednesday Digital Neighbors!!!

Today marks the three hundred and thirtieth birthday of the Frenchman François-Marie Arouet, better known by his nom de plume, Voltaire (1694-1778).
Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV. Widely recognized as one of the greatest French writers, and even hyperbolically referred to by ...
