Any port in a storm - assistance or refuge in s predicament especially an unpalatable one Much like having an albatross tied around one's neck, this phrase comes from the nautical world. It is one I know well but I don't think I hear all that often. For some reason I think it heard more in old movies or TV series from my childhood rather than a phrase that the family used with any regularity.
Following yesterday's phrase about not being a pill, Mom would often use the phrase More excuses than Carter's little liver pills. I think there were a few more words you could substitute form excuses like problems or stories and the phrase seemed to lend itself to disbelief. The little liver pills were patented in the 1860's and were still going strong in my Mother's childhood in the late 1920's and early 30's. She has an old advertisement in the bathroom of two babies on a chamber pot, one happy for using the little pills, another miserable (I'm guessing constipated) because he didn't use the little liver pills. Search for Carter's Little Liver pills images - some really interesting advertising from last century. Happy Thursday Digital Neighbors and the beginning of Autumn! His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV.
