In a recent Coffee Talk I mentioned Robert E. Howard, most famously known for this Conan character of sword & sorcery fame, and his other characters. One of his lesser known characters that I have grown to appreciate is Breckinridge. I stumbled upon the Bear Creek Collection over a decade ago and still enjoy the quirky doofus that is Breckinridge. This is not high literature, but old fashioned pulp fiction.
From Librivox:
Breckinridge Elkins is the roughest, toughest, fastest-shootin', hardest-fightin' feller in the Bear Creek settlement, and probably in the entire Humbolt Mountains. As he travels further from home, he single-handedly takes on outlaws, settles (and starts) feuds and tries his hand at romancing the girls. He also discovers a lot of strange customs among other folks, such as building houses out of boards and wearing clothes that ain't buckskins. Set in Nevada during the late 1800's, this collection of stories is a great rollicking romp through the American frontier as seen through the eyes of one of the most enjoyable characters created in the history of tall tales. (Summary by RK Wilcox)
I am sure the easily offended will find something objectionable in the occasional and dated bigotry that is present in the stories, but I take it as a product of its age and give it no more weight that knowing in somethings we are have improved and in others we have regressed as a culture. It is not everyone's cup of coffee, but there are many public domain books on Librivox, and I am sure you can find an author that appeals to you. Happy Listening!

Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV. Widely recognized as one of the greatest French writers, and even hyperbolically referred to by ...
