Blessed First Sunday of Advent to all — Believer, Questioner or Skeptic, Seeker or Lost, Curious or Bored, Pilgrim or Wanderer — Blessed Advent!
Blessed First Sunday of Advent to all who celebrate and mark this season of preparation for both the End Times (it can’t come soon enough) and the Incarnation of the Word. A reprint of sorts from last year, edited and made a little more concise from 2024.
The Second Coming is the daily prayer of the Church: MARANATHA! Come, Lord Jesus! For the unrepentant and self-absorbed it is a day of trepidation; for those seeking the Living Truth it is a day of joyful anticipation; for those who seek the Eternal Good, a day of unfailing hope; and for those who long for Overwhelming Beauty that is both Luminous and Numinous, a day of unmarred consolation.
In this season we prepare to say to the Luminous and Mysterious One and to His Word, “Thy will be done” — or rather, the Holy One may finally say to us, “Thy will be done.” The latter is the worst thing that could possibly happen to us. Our own will has so often been the most misguided and self-destructive part of the mystery of our personhood. That we have survived our seasons of bad judgment, mindless pursuit, and arrogant assumptions is nothing short of miraculous. If we have learned from them, then at least we have drawn some silver and gold out of the dross of experience.
In our preachy culture of puritanical groupthink and irrational herd-feeling, far too many are quick to deliver lists of demands for how others should improve, while showing little self-awareness of their own need for growth. The result is a society more bitter and divided than ever. Introspection melts away before the relentless march of the woke jihad — yet it is not unstoppable. There remains a foundation that pushes back and a resistance that refuses to yield. There are always signs of hope, and Advent is preeminently the season of hope.
Happy Sunday, my dear digital neighbors.

Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV. Widely recognized as one of the greatest French writers, and even hyperbolically referred to by ...
