Good Morning, digital neighbors! Blessed and happy Sunday to all. Happy Mother’s Day to all the biological, adoptive, foster, and spiritual mothers in our lives. Here are a couple of small prayers for all you Moms out there, followed by a little commentary. Blessed Sunday, digital neighbors!
“Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of motherhood. Today, we celebrate the loving sacrifice of mothers, both biological and spiritual, who nurture and guide us in Your ways. Bless them with joy, strength, and love to continue their selfless devotion. May they feel deeply appreciated and honored not just today, but every day. Amen.”
“O Father, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude for the gift of motherhood. We ask for Your blessings upon all mothers, that they may find joy in their journey, strength in their challenges, and love in their nurturing. May they be filled with Your peace and wisdom as they guide their children in faith and grace. Amen.”
Mom has been gone since 2021 at the age of 94. I remember her and Dad daily and pray for them often. They were far from perfect parents—Mom was bipolar and Dad was an alcoholic—but grace has a funny way of working out the kinks for those who are open to God and His power to act in their lives. There are plenty of stories to tell, not all of them happy or fun, but in the end I am so very grateful that they were my parents, warts and all.
I remember Mom today and thank God for her joyful faith, her amazing wit and sense of humor, her love of people, and her appreciation for beauty—manifested in her gardening, housekeeping, and furniture restoration. She loved hosting and feeding people and almost always met life and the people placed in her path with a ready smile. I admire her long battle to manage and mute her mental and emotional struggles. It wasn’t always easy or successful, but in the end she arrived at a place of peace and stillness. I remember her fondly and thank God for her.

Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV. Widely recognized as one of the greatest French writers, and even hyperbolically referred to by ...
Happy National Best Friends Day Y'all!
I strongly suggest combining celebrations for this with National Name Your Poison Day and National Jelly-Filled Doughnut Day. Think I'll have to wash a custard doughnut down with a cold beer later.
