Mitch Albom - good author. I have read a few of his books. Tuesday with Morrie is still my favorite. His new one is coming out in November and his books are always enjoyable reads. He has some great quotes as well. Purpose & meaning - it provides a grounded living for individuals and communities, much more valuable than entertainment which seems to possess many to such a degree that they lead lives of self-inflicted boredom and lassitude. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy entertainment, but too much of it doesn't leads to vast fields of bliss and contentment, but rather a profound boredom with almost everything else. Persons - not things. I know the truth of that distinction but it is easy to forget and let the things lay claim when only persons should have that influence. Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV.
