The Grand Canyon was renamed the National Barathrum into which all the politicians in Washington D. C. were cast. The next election will determine if others individuals might join them at the bottom of the barathrum.
I know, I know, once you begin casting people into the barathrum, where do you stop? I bet many of us could draw a good line after a period of purification. The burning of books, guillotining of heads and the tossing of bodies in the barathrum rarely gets the results you want, but does provide a degree of satisfaction I suppose. Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
