Good Morning Friends & Digital Neighbors! Happy Friday! Another week looking in the rear view mirror, I hope it has been a good one. A few more quotes and some commentary for the weekend.
A mind, like a home, is furnished by its owner, so if one's life is cold and bare he can blame none but himself. - Louis L' Amour
Do not think of knocking out another's person's brains because he differs in opinion from you. It would be as rational to knock yourself on the head because you differ from yourself ten years ago. - Horace Mann
This is the true joy of life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. - George Bernard Shaw
Lessons & warnings for the extremes in today's quotes. I know I harp on the Left frequently in my morning ramblings. Perhaps it would be less if they didn't control the culture with a strangle hold and a new zeal that would make a medieval bishop envious.
Regarding Louie - filling our mind with distraction does not lead one to fulfillment, but rather boredom. So many channels and so little worth watching. The internet - meaningful podcasts or Tik'Tok, choose wisely. Glowing screens 24/7 or life beyond the glow screen, choose wisely. None to blame but yourself.
Hey Horace - Apparently Antifa has not heard of Horace Mann. Apparently most of the degreed in Academia who believe that letters behind your name (or before) equates more worth to one's "enlightened" opinions has not heard of Horace. (No pedestals for the living - a reoccurring theme in Padre's sermons.) Perhaps with my dearest and deepest held convictions/truths I might just be in error about understanding things, or at least incomplete. I can't imagine living without some doubts that open the door to questions, curiosities and an on going journey of learning and being humble before experience.
Finally Mr. Shaw - Who really wants to be a selfish little clod? I will come and go in the world and my wake will be gone in no time. As far as the world is concerned, by impact will be less than zero. In the little fishbowl of my life, it might hope to be better. For the people I have known and loved, the impact may last well beyond my years and even my name if there are any nuggets of meaning, truth or hope that I can share with those who rub elbows with me. Not everyone's passion looks the same, but all passion ought to provide a reason for facing the day with hope, a quest for meaning, a sense of belonging in this gift of life. Passion ought to leave one with a thought of having given more to life than taken out of it. Passion has different nuances depending on the seasons and chapter in one's life. The world may not be a better place in my passing, but these lives are, and that perhaps is more than enough. Happy Friday Friends!
Winter barn somewhere in Wisconsin - it will be 70 here today. Winter is coming - but a Indian Summer is here for a day or two more.
Today marks the three hundred and thirtieth birthday of the Frenchman François-Marie Arouet, better known by his nom de plume, Voltaire (1694-1778).
Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV. Widely recognized as one of the greatest French writers, and even hyperbolically referred to by ...
