Good Morning Friends & Neighbors! Greetings to all from across the Digital Seas of the Internet! More fun with words on this fine Wednesday Morning! Hoist the sails and off we go! Just a couple of ports of call to visit. ⛵
Breedbat - One who breeds or originates quarrels
TROLLS! They had a name before they were called trolls. And to be fair internet trolls didn't always breed quarrels, often times they just attack and stir up shit. Trolls, shit-posters and the like rarely have a stake in an intentional community as much as they have a need for mindless engagement. Back in the days when they could hide behind the most obscure of screen-names and play their games, frequently annoying, mostly tiresome and occasionally vilely toxic. That last group were the piranhas of forums who smelled blood on some poor person unfortunate enough to engage with them. Breedbats - ignore is the best way to handle them. Locals has that feature, good call on the designers part.
Gobemouche - Naïve person; one who keeps his mouth open; a boor; a silly and credulous person, literally a fly swallower
Paints a pretty picture doesn't it? Mouth agape and in flies the bugs as the person sits or stands there mouth wide open. Somewhere between being a breedbat and a gobemouche is a person on the path to getting their crap together. Don't be a doofus and don't turn into anti-communal antagonist who seeks to disrupt communities rather than participate in them. It is a hard call to judge people who are humorous vs those who are the breedbats, I think the gauge is when the humor turns into personal attacks, and by that I mean attacking you as a person rather than just making a mockery of your sacred ideals, your profession or something you identify with but is not you. Many cannot handle criticisms of their dear lovelies, (on a bad or vulnerable day probably no one can) in which case the world is not a good place to venture. Stay safe in your port of sheltered ideas (universities) where agreement is always and only the norm. The opposite is also true - if all you do is sail into troubled water under constant attack and squalls, you are not charting your course with much forethought. The norm is a mix of calm seas and occasional turbulence, once in a while a violent squall, and exploring the virtual ports of call. Happy Exploring friends!
Today marks the three hundred and thirtieth birthday of the Frenchman François-Marie Arouet, better known by his nom de plume, Voltaire (1694-1778).
Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV. Widely recognized as one of the greatest French writers, and even hyperbolically referred to by ...

Happy Wednesday to all of my neighbors across the internet! Good morning to all you fine souls at Outspoken, Phetasy, Rubin Report, and Padre’s! A morning reflection from St. Thomas More. A wonderful movie to watch if you’ve never seen it is A Man for All Seasons. Paul Scofield delivers a masterful performance as Thomas More—never overly preachy or lecturing. A younger Robert Shaw (who I mostly remember from Jaws) plays a charismatic yet increasingly sour and angry Henry VIII in the face of More’s quiet defiance. Have a great day, dear neighbors!
Give us, Lord, a humble, quiet, peaceable, patient, tender and charitable mind, and in all our thoughts, words and deeds a taste of the Holy Spirit. Give us, Lord, a lively faith, a firm hope, a fervent charity, a love of You. Take from us all lukewarmness in meditation, dullness in prayer. Give us fervour and delight in thinking of You and Your grace, Your tender compassion towards me. The things that we pray for, good Lord, give us ...
