Piggybacking on Mr. Rogers invitation to be a neighbor, Sesame Street invited our young people to a greater awareness of all the vocations that contribute to our neighborhoods. Admittedly they tended to be more urban focused, but not entirely. I have included two different segments on SS hosted by Bob. While Bob McGrath was the main host of segment, it was not his exclusive thing. The simple song opened a world to children of all the people they might meet in their neighborhood as well as stirring the ideas of what they might do with their life. Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
