According to the author this phrase founds its way into the vernacular by the memorization of the poem "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner". We had to read the entire poem in class and memorize portions of it in Junior English as well as the Gettysburg Address. Mom & Dad had to memorize part of the poem as well, so when I griped about memorizing it, I found no hearing in their presence. It is a LONG poem, but a classic one for the life of captain and his crew. Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
