Good Morning Digital Neighbors & ADD Irregulars! Blessed Easter Friday Friends & Refugees, Early Birds & Later Dayers, Phamily & Misfits, Conversants & Lurkers from across Locals. Today's post is a repost from February the 10th of this year when I returned home from the hospital with my less than bionic braces. Brace free as of Tuesday but I have many more miles to go for my recovery and improved mobility.

REPOSTED:
More thoughts from Consolations - The Solace, Nourishment and Underlying Meaning of Everyday Words. This book has been a wonderful bridge between the love of words and the deeper spiritual meaning that words can convey.

JOY

Few things will attract people to you or your passions than the joy with which you embrace them. It is one of the most intoxicating realities in life. What or who brings you joy is so amazing as to seem almost magical and all consuming. Joyful people are naturally attractive, the joyless are universally repulsive. I don't mean sorrowful or trouble souls, I mean joyless, embittered souls who feel that life is not a gift but an obligation that some cosmic reality or social community failed to deliver. The joyless souls are multiplying, people seduced that life owes them something, that they have been cheated by the joy and prosperity of others. The joyless are the envious, and they will never now any solace let alone experience the joy they so resent. Enough Tommy-boy, on to David Whyte and his wisdom. I am sure I will have more ramblings to share. 😁

JOY is a meeting place, of deep intentionality and of self-forgetting, the bodily alchemy of what lies inside us in communion with what formerly seemed outside, but is now neither, but become a living frontier, a voice speaking between us and the world: dance, laughter, affection, skin touching skin, singing in the car, music in the kitchen, the quiet irreplaceable and companionable presence of a daughter. The sheer intoxicating beauty of the world inhabited as an edge between what we previously thought was us and what we thought was radically other than us:

Self-forgetting - so, so, so much the opposite of this current chapter of reality in the WEST when self-obsession has mutated into the intersectionality wars and grievance mongering at previously unseen levels. It is a bitter irony that when I obsess about myself I have a far greater chance of never understanding who I am. Self-reflection and self-obsession seems so similar at onset, but yield very different fruits. Self reflection knocks at the door of self-awareness, of wondering about your story and it unfolding chapters. Self-obsession almost always get mired in the woundedness of life and never get past real or imagined injuries. Not only do you not knock on the door of self-awareness, you accept that you are the summation of your wounds and shortcomings. It is the serpent's whisper leading you away from your true self and selling you the empty promise.

dance, laughter, affection, skin touching skin, singing in the car, music in the kitchen, the quiet irreplaceable and companionable presence of a daughter.

So, so many joys in life. Once one is open to the gift of living, life can become an endless parade of joy. There will always be trials, sorrows and disappointments, but there are so many hidden and surprising joys to be received and celebrated in life. It is difficult not end my the majority of my days in gratitude.

Sheer intoxicating beauty - it is one of the reasons I look for all those barn and other photos that I so often share with these posts. It is one of the things I find most hopeful about social media when I see expressions of beauty and joy in your shared photos and musings here. There is so much more beauty in life than ugliness. There is so much more joy to share than the bitterness that isolations and warps our attitude and eventually our soul.

To feel a full and untrammelled joy is to have become fully generous; to allow ourselves to be joyful is to have walked through the doorway of fear, the dropping away of the anxious, worried self, felt like a thankful death itself, a disappearance, a giving away, overheard in the laughter of friendship, the vulnerability of happiness and the vulnerability of its imminent loss, felt suddenly as a strength, a solace and a source: the claiming of our place in the living conversation, the sheer privilege of being in the presence of a mountain, a sky or a well-loved familiar face. I was here, and you were here, and together we made a world.

Untrammeled - a word seldom seen or used. Fun stuff with words!!!! I noticed that spell check prefers the one L instead of two LLs. I speak 'Merikan, not English. 😉

To become fully generous - that is a praiseworthy goal for our striving. I suspect it is something like humility, when you pass that threshold, you don't know it, but everyone around you does as they become the recipients of your generosity of heart. The laughter of friendship, the vulnerability of happiness, strength, solace and a source - such a gift with words to open up a well of meaning on just a single word/reality called joy. David Whyte has some great things to share and he has stirred my souls in deeper appreciation.

the claiming of our place in the living conversation, the sheer privilege of being in the presence of a mountain, a sky or a well-loved familiar face.

I am so humbled and thankful that I have never felt the aloneness that infirmity can often bring to our experience. God is always with me, I have thought longer and deeper on the meaning of Immanuel over these past two weeks than during any Advent. Thank you all for being with me from the moment I shared news of my fall. Your prayer, love and friendship have made this the most bearable of events and has constantly invited me to reflect upon my blessings rather than my struggles and losses. I am so thankful for the laughter we share and the weirdness of our little niche' of the internet. @MinaH Thank you Clare for letting your skillset be a sort of descriptive template for our gatherings. Have a great day friends & digital neighbors!

NEW Commentary & Babbling

I hope you find joy along your path. It is a strange gift you discover in life and share with others. While things may be the cause for a joyful reaction, it is from your heart, your appreciation that joy flows out to others. Joy is something that wells up from within our depths and Disciples believe it is from the prompting of the Holy Spirit, for non-disciples I think it is the workings of luminous grace touching the core of our mysterious personhood.

Voltaire's birthday 11-21-1694 - A brief essay by Steve Weidenkopf

Today marks the three hundred and thirtieth birthday of the Frenchman François-Marie Arouet, better known by his nom de plume, Voltaire (1694-1778).

Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.

Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV. Widely recognized as one of the greatest French writers, and even hyperbolically referred to by ...

Garden of the Beloved - read by Lady Clare - Chapter 9
The Comforting of the Disciple

The Comforting of the Disciple

Now the Beloved often came into the Garden both because of the great joy He had in the Garden and because of the great love He bore the Lover and the Disciple.  Often He talked with the Lover, but the Disciple because he was not yet perfected in Love could neither hear nor see the Beloved, though he often felt a strange joy, he did not know why.  Therefore he was sorrowful, for it seemed to him that on account of his sins he would never find the Beloved.  So weeping he came to the Lover and said, “Sir, I know that I am a very sinful man and I much fear that though I search all my life yet on account of my sins I shall never find the Beloved.”

In reply the Lover smiled gently and said, “My son, when you first came into the Garden do you remember what sort of day it was?”

“Yes,” said the Disciple, “I remember it.  It was dark and gloomy as if no sunlight ever entered the Garden.”

“When you began to strip off your rich robes,” the Lover asked, “what happened to the day?”

“It seemed,” said the Disciple, “as if the sun had suddenly broken through the clouds and the whole Garden shone with glorious and celestial light:  such light as shines daily in the Garden.”

The Lover replied, “Know that the Beloved Himself is the light of the Garden, so that when you began searching for the Beloved even then you found Him, for how can any know the desire to search for the Beloved if He had not already without his knowing revealed Himself to him.”

So the Disciple was greatly comforted by knowing that although he could not see or hear Him he had already found the Beloved, and he labored the more joyously to do the service of the Beloved.

Thoughts on Alan - Updated with Alan's e-mail address

Dear ADD Irregulars,

Alan has decided to step away from our community for a while. He may return, but right now he’s in a difficult chapter of life. This past year has been especially rough for him—depression, anxiety, unemployment, and some challenging family situations.

I spoke with him briefly on Telegram. He admitted to feeling worn down, and the recent football meme hit him at exactly the wrong moment and in the wrong state of mind. He didn’t sound like he was blaming Rich, but in his current vulnerability, he experienced the exchange as unnecessarily mean-spirited. I suspect the “whiny-cunt” line cut much deeper than it normally would have.

That’s the funny and frightening thing about emotions: on a good day, that back-and-forth between Alan and Rich would have been hilarious. On a bad day, it was simply too much. No one could have known beforehand.

In Alan’s own words: “I saw it at exactly the wrong moment and it just hit me as unnecessarily mean spirited which was something I just didn't expect and am really not in a place to cope with at the moment.”

This is the danger of this medium. We log on hoping for relief or distraction, and instead we sometimes encounter something that offends, outrages, or wounds us. I feel for Alan—I know from previous conversations that this has not been a good year for him.

Let this be a reminder to all of us: Do not venture onto the internet when you’re in a state of emotional vulnerability. It rarely goes the way we hope. Pressure always seeks an escape valve, and online spaces are full of sharp edges. It is far better to talk with a real person—call someone and hear a human voice with all its nuance—than to stare at static words on a screen that you can reread over and over, each time deepening the wound.

Praying for Alan and so sorry he is at this chapter in his life. I am guessing he might be open to any of us reaching out. I don't really know.  I know he is still on telegram, but not sure how esle to contact him.

Rich, if you read this I hope you chalk it under unfortunate shit happens. On most other days that post would have generated the funny back and forth that we have seen many times in the past.  I am sure Alan would be open to any conversation with you, that is an invitation never an expectation.

[email protected]  For anyone who might want to contact Alan.
