ALWAYS A GLIMMER OF HOPE
Sometimes we feel deflated, or overwhelmed, or someone or something hurts us, disappoints us, or we hear bad news about a loved one’s medical condition. On those days, when you feel your light has gone out, remember there is always a glimmer of hope and something to be thankful for.
Sometimes our light goes out, but is blown again into instant flame by an encounter with another human being. Each of us owes the deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this inner light.

I pray someone is your glimmer of hope if you find yourself struggling this day or in this season. May such a chance encounter, treasured friend or family member be the one to rekindle your inner light. May you find yourself knowingly or unknowingly being that spark of hope for another. May the Luminous use you in surprising and unexpected ways that brightens the path of another pilgrim on their way. May the shared light help us to see more clearly and walk more confidently into a future that is filled with hope.
Today marks the three hundred and thirtieth birthday of the Frenchman François-Marie Arouet, better known by his nom de plume, Voltaire (1694-1778).
Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV.
