Updated Welcome to Padre's

Welcome Digital Neighbors! I hope you enjoy your visits here. Welcome to our odd spot on the internet. It is an eclectic and eccentric community to say the least. It began back in January of 2021 and has grown rather slowly over the years. It is a gathering of fine souls from across the Locals-sphere as well as individuals who found their way here through friendship, ministry, or real-life encounters with me.

While I am a Catholic priest, this is not a religious community. I have nothing against religious centered communities, there are plenty of them out there hosted by far more interesting priests than myself. I share plenty of religious and Catholic-centric things here, but this really developed as an alternative to Facebook for me. I have a variety of interests in life, faith is central and foremost, but far from exclusive among my interests. There is a definite cultural and political undercurrent to many of our posts, but this is far from just another political community. I would say among the Irregulars there is a healthy sense of skepticism, humor, and well-earned derision for the current state of things. It is a good mix of conservative, classical liberal, libertarian, and other nuanced points of view. None of us think the government is the answer or that life is about politics. One must be aware and engaged otherwise the government and its goons will exploit you. Politics is the poorest replacement for faith, spirituality or even religion and many have done just that.

I am here for community. While there is a $2 cover charge to post in the community, it is as nominal as I can make it. The collected funds will go to various charities designated by the community. There are some regular features you should know about when joining the community.

Coffee Talk with the ADD Irregulars – 7 days a week at 6:00 AM Central video chat. You don’t have to use your camera; voice chat is more than enough and adds a more personal dimension to our community.

Speakeasies & Afterhours – Video chats at different times of the day. @AudreyAudrey and @MinaH have been gracious enough in the past to also host video chats.

MOTW – Meme of the Week. There are a fair number of memes posted in the community, if you are on Locals I suspect you are not among the easily offended. @Bloodyskies is kind enough to curate them and there are weekly votes for the coveted and esteemed MOTW Award.

Written and video musings and ramblings by Padre and others. I try to keep them to 5 minutes, occasionally you will get a longer one.

Again, welcome and I hope you can laugh with us and find a place of fellowship.

Voltaire's birthday 11-21-1694 - A brief essay by Steve Weidenkopf

Today marks the three hundred and thirtieth birthday of the Frenchman François-Marie Arouet, better known by his nom de plume, Voltaire (1694-1778).

Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.

Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV. Widely recognized as one of the greatest French writers, and even hyperbolically referred to by ...
