QUIETENING
Teach me O Lord,
in the midst of noise,
the bustle of business,
that You are there, near, close by,
even within the creative noise I sometimes cannot bear:
That I can find quietness and peace within,
to regain my strength and offer it to You,
for Your glory’s sake.
Amen.
Roger Bush , PRAYERS FOR PAGANS
NINE SPIRITUAL REMEDIES
1. A little more patience—to tolerate those with whom I must live and who are not at all congenial to me.
2. A little firmness—to continue this work which duty demands but which is repellant to me.
3. A little more humility—to remain at the post to which God has led me but which does not correspond with my dreams and plans.
4. A little more common sense—to take people as they are, not as I should like them to be.
5. A little more prudence—not to bother so much about other people’s own business.
6. A little more strength—to endure that which so suddenly disturbs the soul.
7. A little more cheerfulness—so as not to show I have been hurt.
8. A little more unselfishness—in trying to understand the thoughts and feelings of others.
9. Above all a little more prayer, to draw God to my heart and take counsel with him.

Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV.
