Good Morning, Digital Neighbors! The video below has some great advice from Bishop Barron. The title is a little misleading. God’s anger is directed to our sinfulness, often manifested in our indifference or slavish obsession with self. He offers some good points on breaking out of the prison of ourselves and our addiction to the emptiness of the world.
It raises a good question about how we begin our days and what attitude we carry in our hearts throughout the day. I don’t write many of these morning missives much anymore, at one point they used to be a daily occurrence, but I found myself often taking in too much of the world while trying to focus on something great than all the trivialities of the world and especially the internet. Do I care about the current situation of our nation and the world, absolutely. But my desires lie beyond the focus of this world. Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
