IF I KNEW THE WAYS OF ANIMALS
If I knew the sweep of winged things
—the sulphur among the alfalfas
the lark in the sky—
I would know everything
the eagle knows
about the earth’s fine geometry
and its handsome curvature
If I knew the compass of creeping, crawling things
—the worm that comes out to greet the rain
the caterpillar that has its cheek on beauty—
I would know everything
the garter snake knows
about mixing colors
to match the palette of mottled leaves
that have fallen from the paper birch
If I knew the ways of majestic beasts—
the lion’s proud strutting
the elephant’s lumbering walk—
I would know everything the wolf knows which has left
a scattering of feathers
that belonged to a grouse
If I knew the sail that belonged to swift things
—the cheetah’s explosive dash
the quick scamper of a squirrel to the tree top—
I would know everything
the gazelle knows
the way he walks
among the sounds of the forest
If I knew the habits of near-home creatures—
the owl in its bower
the cat at the window sunning himself—
and could meditate on the grandeur that marks the land
I would know everything
a good heart knows
the voice of God
from his resplendent tower.

His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV. Widely recognized as one of the greatest French writers, and even hyperbolically referred to by ...
