Good morning, digital neighbors, and Merry Christmas—Day 3 for you 12 Dayers out there! Today is three French hens and the virtues of faith, hope, and love. While I enjoy sharing my morning thoughts and online preaching, as it were, it is enjoyable to talk about other subjects from time to time. One of my insomnia-fed hobbies has been podcasts on history—those that are data-driven and those that are more speculative because there is insufficient data or whatever records we may possess are too fragmentary and incomplete.
On a personal note, I usually get a good four hours of uninterrupted sleep and then another two to three of partial sleep and disoriented dreams. I wouldn’t say my mind races when I wake up; it is more like, “Are you kidding me? It’s only 1:26 in the morning??” Sometimes I drift back into lighter sleep and its weird dreams, but most mornings I lie there petting the kitten (Ivy) or the dog (Rylee) if either of them has decided to lie beside me. Today marks the three hundred and thirtieth birthday of the Frenchman François-Marie Arouet, better known by his nom de plume, Voltaire (1694-1778).
Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV.
