Good Morning, Digital Neighbors! ✝️ TGIF! I try my best to thank the Luminous all the time, but I understand the joy of Friday and the promise of the weekend ahead for so many people. Today’s word is one familiar to many of us who grew up in the ’70s and enjoy the rock and pop of that decade. My musical taste is eclectic, to say the least. My parents were into big band, jazz, swing, and lounge music, with a great love for the crooners of the ’50s. Dad had a personal fondness for Tony Mottola and his easy guitar playing. Tony was late-night music for Mom and Dad on the turntable.
My older siblings—4 brothers and 1 sister—were very much into the pop and rock of the ’60s and ’70s. Their musical tastes became mine, and finally, throw in the neighbors in the little country town we moved to in 1970, and country slowly filtered into that mix. It was a wonderful childhood of music. Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV.
