Good morning, Digital Neighbors! Happy Sabbath and Saturday to all my neighbors across the internet. I hope you had a great week and that your weekend is off to a good start.

I have the day off today and will be traveling to visit a lifelong friend and his wife. They have a wonderful historic house in central Missouri, just outside of Fayette. It’s about a 2½-hour drive from here. I’m really looking forward to our time together.

YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE

So make it worth your while.
Be fearless, true to yourself
and give everything you have.
Live for today and take care of the people you love,
and those that love you will do the same.

Let go of anything that is negative
and holding you down,
and always search for the positive
that will help you fly.

Don’t waste time worrying about a life
that is limited, because everything that challenges
your spirit makes you stronger.

Keep moving toward all the good that you can find
because the reward for a life that is lived
to the fullest, is a life that is extraordinary
and filled with purpose.

Explore every exciting opportunity
and each open door.
Don’t be held back by what you are unsure about.
Forever pursue what your heart is craving because
it will always lead you to your best self.

This is the only life you have so always
reach for the best.
Don’t let anyone deter you from being fiercely
happy and content.

As long as you come from a place of
honesty and truth, you will deserve all the goodness
that finds its way to you.

Remember to listen, touch, hold, and contribute.
And never forget to give, respect, love, and embrace.
Your life can be genuinely amazing
if you just live it every day!
— Lori Erberhardy

The only caveat I would add to Lori’s words is this: If God is at the front and center of your life, everything else can fall into its proper place. There is no better foundation than Him.

Peace & prayers, your friendly neighborhood Padre, Tom

Voltaire's birthday 11-21-1694 - A brief essay by Steve Weidenkopf

Today marks the three hundred and thirtieth birthday of the Frenchman François-Marie Arouet, better known by his nom de plume, Voltaire (1694-1778).

Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.

Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV. Widely recognized as one of the greatest French writers, and even hyperbolically referred to by ...

The Beautiful

The Beautiful

Said the Disciple to the Lover, “Sir, before I left the world I heard certain men who were held in high esteem and thought to know the will of the Beloved say that those who loved the Beautiful did not love the Beloved but loved idols, yet in the Garden of the Beloved we are ever striving to create beauty for the pleasure of the Beloved.  Were they then speaking the truth?”

The Lover answered, “Those who said this had never glimpsed the form of the Beloved nor ever truly sought Him, for all beauty is but the reflection of the beauty of the Beloved, although seen very dimly as in a dark and faulty mirror, even as all goodness is a dim reflection of the goodness of the Beloved.  So it is that those who love beauty and goodness recognize dimly in them the form of the Beloved and though often in ignorance those who are seeking the Beautiful and the Good are seeking after the Beloved.”
