Good Morning Friends and Digital Neighbors! Happy Saturday Supporters, Members and other wandering souls! Playing Poker this evening with the gang. It has grown a bit since I first started these evenings with my sister, brother-in-law and other parishioners. It looks like we will have two tables, one for the purest who don't like wild cards, and those who do.
Poker is a good analogy for life. A my parent's 50th Anniversary I dealt dad the makings of a Full House and he discard correctly and got the Full House, which is a freaking awesome hand in straight poker. My sermon/homily after that was about making the most of the hand dealt you in every deal of life, most hands aren't that good. Some are just terrible and you fold, many are in between and a few are really good. Playing each hand well, recognizing it for what it is, is all part of the grand game of life. Cue the Gambler Happy Saturday Friends!
Anyway - here are some fun one lines and quotes about poker.
"Life is like a game of cards. The hand you are dealt is determinism; the way you play it is free will." - Jawaharlal Nehru
"Each player must accept the cards life deals him or her; but once they are in hand, he or she alone must decide how to play the cards in order to win the game." - Voltaire
"Cards are one means of bridging differences in age and habits, drawing children and parents, old and new friends together in fair and friendly competition." - Florence Osborn
"I stayed up one night playing poker with tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died." - Steven Wright
"Marriage is a lot like playing cards. In the beginning, all you need is two hearts and a diamond. By the end, you’ll wish you had a club and a spade." - Unknown

Born into a bourgeois family during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King” (r. 1643-1715), Voltaire suffered tragedy at a young age when his mother died. Never close with his father or brother, Voltaire exhibited a rebellious attitude toward authority from his youth. His brilliant mind was fostered in the care of the Society of Jesus, who introduced him to the joys of literature and theater. Despite his later criticisms against the Church, Voltaire, throughout his life, fondly recalled his dedicated Jesuit teachers.
Although he spent time as a civil servant in the French embassy to the Hague, Voltaire’s main love was writing—an endeavor where he excelled in various genres, including poetry, which led to his appointment as the royal court poet for King Louis XV. Widely recognized as one of the greatest French writers, and even hyperbolically referred to by ...
Happy National Autistic Pride Day! Here's hoping you're not too socially awkward to find celebrating with others exhausting. What an odd thing to proud of.
Anyway, here's some terrible memes from which you're cordially invited to choose your (least?) favourite.
